Understanding Comics - Panel shapes to show the passage of time

Scott brings up a variety of ways to represent the passage of time between panels in a comic. These passages could show that a certain action or phase of movement took a long time in relation to those portrayed on either side of it. Lengthening the panel itself is a good method, and causes the reader's eye to linger on the lengthened panel and thus extend the moment in their perception of time. Omitting the borders of a panel can also give it a 'timeless' quality -- the same as allowing the panel to run off the edge of the page.
